What Aera does

Aera gives a buyer a dedicated place to build a deposit, teaches the home-buying process in short lessons, and pairs an AI coach that knows the buyer's finances with human coaches for the transaction itself. Derek Handley, who built and sold companies in New Zealand and the United States before returning home, founded it after concluding that the next generation could not buy a first home without a different kind of help.

The secret

The hard part of buying a first home is not the mortgage, it is the years before it, and no bank makes money from those years. Aera does, because it earns when the buyer completes the purchase, so it is the one company in the chain whose incentives run with the buyer from day one.

Why NZVC invested in Aera

NZVC invested in Aera. We file the company under Consumer and Marketplace on the portfolio wall.

We backed Aera because first-home ownership is the defining financial problem for a generation in New Zealand and Australia, and Derek Handley is a founder with the record, the network and the reason to solve it. The model of saving, learning and coaching in one place, paid for by the transaction rather than by the saver, aligns the company with its customers in a way the existing players cannot match.
