Marama Labs raised 1.75 million euros to take CloudSpec from wine into pharmaceuticals
Marama Labs raised 1.75 million euros to move CloudSpec out of winemaking and into drug development. Physicists out of Victoria University of Wellington's Raman Laboratory built the instrument because no UV-Vis spectrophotometer before it could read a cloudy liquid, and a measurement that took two hours of sample preparation now takes about 15 seconds.
We backed Marama Labs because sample preparation is a hidden bottleneck across every industry that relies on spectroscopy, and removing it saves real time and cost. Wine gave the team a demanding first market to prove the instrument, with customers including Giesen and Cloudy Bay, and the same core measurement opens much larger opportunities in pharmaceuticals and food. The technology came out of serious university physics and paying customers now run it in production.
