What Becoming Bio does

Becoming Bio

Becoming Bio engineered a lab-grown placenta that can nurture a mouse embryo outside the body, which opens a way to watch development happen rather than infer it after the fact. Founder Divya Dhar Cohen is a New Zealand-trained medical doctor with a Wharton MBA and a Harvard MPA, and the company operates largely in stealth.

The secret

Growing a placenta in the lab makes development observable while it happens. That turns the earliest stages of life from something reconstructed afterwards into something you can measure directly and use to predict how an organism changes over time.

Why NZVC invested in Becoming Bio

NZVC invested in Becoming Bio from NZVC Fund II. We file the company under Bio and Healthcare on the portfolio wall.

We backed Becoming Bio because personalized, biology-driven health is moving from niche to mainstream, and the team pairs scientific credibility with a product built for everyday people rather than laboratories. Longevity and preventive health is a large and fast-growing market, and Becoming Bio is early to the shift from generic advice toward guidance grounded in each person's own data. We were drawn to the founders' ambition and their focus on turning complex science into something people can act on.
